Links for Irish VIPs

Below is a small collection of links of interest to blind or visually impaired people in Ireland. Please come back from time to time to check for updates.

Direct links to text-only websites, radio stations, tutorials, etc. Maintained by Francis Kane who is an ICT trainer for the NCBI.

Accessible RTÉ Player

The accessible version of the RTÉ Player. Maximise the window to ensure the player functions correctly.

Simply type in your starting location, final destination, and the date on which you intend to travel, click on the Get Timetable button and this website will give you bus (including private coach operators) and rail options. Much more accessible than the official Bus Éireann and Irish Rail offerings. Also provides listings for carsharing. Drivers can add a journey and intending passengers can request a lift.

Aer Lingus

The accessible version of the Aer Lingus trip planner.

Ryanair also have an accessible trip planner. Minimalist. Just the form controls And no explanatory text. JAWS reads out the field names twice which is irritating and confusing.

NCBI Digital Library

A huge selection of audio books for you to download and listen to on your computer or portable audio device. Registration required.

Try out the Irish language synthesiser. Convert Irish names and phrases to speech for correct pronunciation.

If you think there are any glaring omissions from this ever-growing collection of links, please contact me (or leave a comment below) and I’ll gladly consider your submission for inclusion in the next update.
